Schools have an important role to play in the protection of children. They share a responsibility for this with other agencies and with the children’s families.
‘Safe and Well: A handbook for staff, schools and education authorities’ (SEED 2005) gives advice to education authorities on the arrangements which should be made for ensuring that effective child protection procedures are in place.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child also has implications for schools in developing their child protection procedures. Recently published Framework for Standards’ and ‘The Charter’ (SEED 2004) provide the benchmark for the delivery of child protection services to children.
